Clients and Projects
Client: Mining Association of Canada
Project: National and Community Engagement
On behalf of the Mining Association of Canada (MAC), Stratos led regional and community consultations on developing an Aboriginal engagement policy for the mining industry and developed a national advisory panel with a multi-interest design
team. Our firm continues to facilitate MAC's Community of Interest Panel meetings with First Nations, Métis and Inuit representation, first initiated in 2004. As a result of this work, Aboriginal communities have expressed appreciation for outreach efforts
by the industry and there is strengthened confidence and reputation among key stakeholder groups.

Stratos reports on climate change risks in the mining industry
Climate change poses a number of risks to Canada’s natural resource sectors, including the mining industry. Extreme weather events, changes in precipitation patterns, permafrost degradation, and drought could all have impacts on a mining operations. One of the largest environmental liabilities facing the industry is acid rock drainage (ARD), which can lead to the release of contaminated water from active and abandoned mines. Understanding how climate change will impact ARD is important to mining companies and policy makers for making informed decisions on the economic and environmental sustainability of future mine development. Stratos worked with Brodie Consulting Ltd. to conduct a high-level risk assessment of the impacts of climate change on ARD at Canadian mines. This assessment builds on previous work by looking more closely at the vulnerability of ARD-related infrastructure and activities and determining which impacts are most likely and significant. The analysis included the cost implications of reactively adapting to climate change instead of taking steps in the planning and design phase of the mine. This work was conducted on behalf of the Mine Environment Neutral Drainage (MEND) program, and was funded by MEND and the Mining Association of Canada. You can read the full report here.
