George Greene, BSc, MASc
Chair

George Greene is one of the founders, and former President of Stratos.  He works with executive teams and boards in the public, private and not-for-profit sectors providing advice on strategic direction and policy for sustainability. He has long experience with the governance of membership organizations including multilateral international organizations, industry associations and non-governmental organizations at the national and international level.  His focus is on sustainable development and major projects in the natural resources and energy sectors, including oil and gas, mining, hydropower and other utilities and forestry.

George Greene is an experienced moderator, mediator and negotiator in multi-interest institutions and for policy and program processes. He has over 30 years experience as a small- and large-group facilitator, and has designed and led national and international multi-stakeholder processes on climate change and energy policy, nature conservation planning and sustainability performance in the mining, forest products and other sectors.

George was deputy head of IUCN - The World Conservation Union in the 1990s and currently serves as a Member of the IUCN Council and Chair of its Governance Committee. He has been an environmental manager in the oil and gas and mining industries, and was director general of policy development at the Canadian International Development Agency. George has led Canada’s international teams to the Global Environment Facility, the Convention to Combat Desertification and the World Summit on Social Development. He is a past member of the board of the Sierra Club of Canada Foundation, and the board of the International Institute for Sustainable Development.

Matt Loose, MA, MSci
Director

Matt is a Director of Stratos with a focus on corporate sustainability. He brings deep experience on sustainability strategy and implementation.

Matt works with executive teams to assess the strategic implications of sustainability and develop approaches to build business value and improve performance. He is an experienced facilitator and a recognised expert on sustainability reporting. He brings experience of working with global sustainability leaders across a range of sectors.

Matt has particular expertise in the food and agriculture, chemicals and oils and gas industries and with crown corporations. His clients have included ALSTOM, BASF, BDC, BHP Billiton, BP, Canada Post, Canada Lands, Coca-Cola, Dow Chemical, Farm Credit Canada, Microsoft, National Capital Commission, Nestle, O2, Shell, Statoil, Vodafone and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development. He brings practical experience in implementing sustainability in an industry context having developed the sustainability reporting program for speciality chemicals company Johnson Matthey.

Prior to joining Stratos, Matt held a similar position at SustainAbility, a UK-based sustainability consultancy, where he led the Global Reporters research program, an internationally recognised rating of leading sustainability reporting. Matt has also worked for the Environment and Sustainability team at Ernst & Young where he focused on sustainability report assurance.

Stephanie Meyer, MES, CEA
Director

Stephanie is one of Stratos’ founding Principals with substantial experience in environmental and sustainability strategy, implementation and assurance. Stephanie works with public and private sector organizations to develop targeted, actionable sustainability strategies and to integrate environmental and sustainability considerations into their decision-making and management processes. She believes that moving towards more sustainable practices requires changed behaviours - and that this change needs to be carefully planned and managed. As such, she approaches each assignment as a form of change management exercise. Drawing on her experience as an environmental manager and auditor, Stephanie brings a practical, systems-based perspective to her consulting practice.

Stephanie is an experienced facilitator and trainer, and has designed and led many workshops, large meetings and training sessions. She is a Certified Environmental Auditor and an active member of the Auditing Association of Canada. Before joining Stratos, she was the environment, health and safety specialist for NIKE's Canadian manufacturing operations (following NIKE's acquisition of Bauer Inc.). She holds a Masters Degree in Environmental Studies from Dalhousie University and is bilingual in English and French. Outside the office, she spends as much time as possible outdoors – hiking, biking and chasing her little girls.

Julie Pezzack, BAH, MES
Director

Julie Pezzack is a Director at Stratos and leads the corporate sustainability line of business. Julie specializes in sustainability management, stakeholder engagement and reporting and works with clients to effectively integrate sustainability into their decision-making and management processes. Julie has particular expertise in designing and facilitating multi-stakeholder advisory panels around sustainability strategy and reporting.

Working with clients across a range of sectors has given Julie a wealth of experience and an excellent understanding of best practice and approaches and tools to sustainability management. Julie draws on this expertise to build customized solutions for Stratos clients, some of which include:  BC Hydro, Canada Lands Corporation (CLC), Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP), Devon Energy, Nexen, Petro-Canada, PotashCorp, Suncor, Syncrude, Talisman, TELUS, The Co-operators and Vancity.

Prior to joining Stratos, Julie worked in a large national consulting firm and in municipal government. She has a Masters Degree in Environmental Studies from Dalhousie University and a Bachelor of Arts Honours degree in Political Studies from Queen's University. Julie is qualified as an ISO 14001 Lead Auditor and completed AccountAbility’s coursework in Sustainability Assurance.

Outside of work Julie enjoys outdoor sports of all kinds and international travel to such destinations as Bhutan, Bolivia, Mexico, Nepal, Peru, Tanzania and Rwanda.

Sven Riemer, MSc, PMP
Director

Sven Riemer is a Director at Stratos and leads the Public Sector Management Practice. He works with clients at the federal and provincial levels on performance management, management review and strategic project management with a particular focus on those departments, agencies and programs with a sustainability related mandate. 

His performance management work relates to performance measurement and reporting strategies, and evaluation strategies and frameworks. Sven conducts strategic management reviews to align organizational structure with strategic objectives. Building on his credentials and experience as a project management professional (PMP), he further provides advice on strategic project management.

Sven hold a Masters degree in Geography from the University of Bonn, Germany.

Michael van Aanhout, P.Eng. (B.C.)
President

Michael joined Stratos in 2000 as a senior management consultant and became President in 2005.  Michael works directly with clients as a strategic advisor across Stratos' lines of business in corporate sustainability and public sector engagements.  In line with Stratos’ vision, his work is grounded in a desire to translate sound sustainability, energy and environmental policy and strategy into business value, improved performance, and real change towards a sustainable future.  In addition to strategy and management consulting, Michael works with clients and communities of interest to design, manage, and facilitate consultation and engagement processes on a range of sustainability issues.  Prior to joining Stratos, Michael worked in a large national consulting firm, as an environmental manager in industry and government, and as an operational engineer.  

Michael graduated from the Royal Military College of Canada, participated in the Leadership Forum at the University of Ottawa, School of Management Centre for Executive Education, is a Registered Professional Engineer in the Province of British Columbia and a member of the Performance Planning Exchange.   Outside of the office, Michael enjoys self-propelled recreation and sports all year round with family and friends.
