Aaron Amorosi, BES, CEA
Senior Consultant

Aaron Amorosi is a senior consultant and Certified Environmental Auditor (CEA). His solid understanding of sustainability issues, and having the skills required to analyze them, enables him to work effectively and add value to consulting assignments for both the public and private sector. Aaron works cross-functionally across the organization and lends his experience in the areas of corporate social and environmental responsibility, strategy, policy development, integration and assurance. This role has enabled Aaron to refine his skills in project management, strategic planning, and innovative problem solving.

Aaron's expertise is focused on environment, health and safety (EHS) management system development, implementation, improvement, and auditing. He has worked on a wide range of policy, management and  assurance consulting assignments for over 18 different public sector departments / agencies. Other public sector assignments include program design and implementation, development of guidance documents, manuals, and procedures, performance measurement, and federal legislation and program evaluation.

Aaron has extended his knowledge and skills in environmental and sustainability management to the private sector through engagements with clients in the oil and gas, power, financial and manufacturing sectors in the areas of EHS management systems development, sustainability reporting, and environmental compliance auditing.

Aaron is a graduate of the University of Waterloo with an Honours Bachelors Degree in Environmental Studies and a Certificate in Environmental Assessment. Before joining Stratos, Aaron held positions at the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, EnviroBusiness Directions Inc., the Residential Energy Efficiency Project, Hydro One Networks Inc., Ontario Power Generation Inc. and Imperial Oil Ltd.

Siobhan Arnott, BES, MA
Senior Consultant

Siobhan Arnott is a senior consultant supporting both the risk practice and Aboriginal relations at Stratos. She provides expertise to both public sector and non-governmental organization clients undertaking integrated risk management and developing corporate risk profiles, engaging in strategic planning exercises and undergoing program, management or governance reviews. Her clients include the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, Indian and Northern Affairs Canada, the Department of National Defense, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans and the Assembly of First Nations. Siobhan is a skilled project manager, policy analyst, event planner, researcher and analyst.

Prior to joining Stratos, Siobhan worked for the National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy, the Assembly of First Nations, Environment Canada, the Ontario Ministries of Transportation and the Ontario Ministry of Environment on species at risk, environmental assessment and protection, mining, water and wastewater issues. Key projects included developing an Aboriginal engagement and consultation guide for Environment Canada, coordinating the National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy’s (NRTEE) ‘Aboriginal Communities and Non-renewable Resource Development Program,’ managing the Ontario circuit rider training program and implementing the first national First Nations’ environment conference.

Siobhan is a graduate of the University of Waterloo where she obtained a Master of Arts degree in Regional Planning and Resource Development with a focus on municipal waste management.

Outside of work, Siobhan enjoys running, kayaking or hiking outdoors, volunteering in the community, writing or creating art with her two girls.

Emma Bedlington, BA, MBA
Consultant

Emma is a consultant with Stratos and works with both public and private sector clients to develop comprehensive sustainability strategies. She brings a strong understanding of the business case for sustainability to a variety of projects. While at Stratos, Emma has completed work for a number of clients, including Hydro Ottawa, the oil and gas industry, the Federation of Canadian Municipalities and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.

Emma has an MBA from the Segal Graduate School of Business at Simon Fraser University where she specialized in sustainable business development.  Her MBA research focused on the reputational and strategic considerations of environmental branding, organizational change and the cross-cultural implications of corporate social responsibility. Emma also has a Double Major in Geography and International Development from McGill University.

Prior to completing her MBA and joining Stratos, Emma was a geomatics analyst for two federal departments. She also spent three years working in Asia and speaks Japanese. In her spare time Emma enjoys beach volleyball, camping and exploring the Ottawa Valley.

Ben Cattaneo, BA(Hons.), MA, MSc.
Manager

Ben is a seasoned risk management professional with nearly ten years of experience helping multinational companies and international organizations develop, implement and evaluate their risk management strategies, organizational cultures, and risk management systems and processes.  Ben possesses extensive experience in helping multinational companies integrate important strategic risks (i.e. reputational, environmental, social, country and political risks) into their Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) programmes.  This has included helping organizations implement risk management programmes associated with new market entries, major acquisitions or other strategic changes.  Ben’s work has also included helping organizations understand and quantify their financial exposure to various types of risks, develop resourcing strategies, and implement and measure improvements. Ben is experienced at managing large and multi-disciplinary project teams.    He has managed projects for a range of clients including Shell International, Chevron, Rio Tinto, Anglo American, BHP Billiton, The International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM), The Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT), The International Finance Corporation (IFC), The Asian Development Bank (ADB), and The European Commission (EC).

Ben has also produced thought leadership articles on risk management and sustainable development including a chapter in Managing Business Risk: A Practical Guide to Protecting Your Business (London: Kogan Page, 2005, Jonathan Reuvid, editor) and articles on political and country risk for Mining Journal, Mineweb and International Mining Magazine.   He has also spoken on these topics at a range of conferences including Mining Indaba in Cape Town, S Africa (2005, 2006 and 2007), a global precious metals conference in Montreux, Switzerland (2006), the International Zinc College in Australia and Mexico (2008, 2006). 

Ben holds an MSc. in Finance from the University of London (UK), an MA in International Relations from the University of Geneva (Switzerland) and a BA (Hons.) from the University of Windsor (Ontario).

Alison Chafe, BCom, MBA
Senior Consultant

Alison, a senior consultant with Stratos, brings a strong understanding of the business case for sustainable development to work with both public and private sector clients. 

Alison has expertise on the systems, tools and best practices to manage and implement sustainability, including performance management systems, training, and sustainability reporting.  She brings a strategic perspective to her work and has a track record of helping organisations bridge strategy and implementation.   Some of her recent projects include:  recommending key sustainability performance metrics for a financial institution; recommending improvements to an oil and gas company’s sustainability report; developing orientation materials for managers of contaminated site remediation projects; and contributing to the development of a strategic plan for a member-based organization.  

Prior to joining Stratos, Alison gained over 10 years of experience in business consulting; project management; and information systems management and reporting.  She has worked across a range of sectors including banking, insurance, telecommunications, and entertainment industries and the non-profit sector. She has particular expertise in the retail sector.  She has worked directly with large Canadian corporations to support them in achieving their sustainability objectives.  

Alison has a Master’s in Business Administration specializing in Business and Sustainability and a Bachelor of Commerce specializing in Management Information Systems.

Jennifer Davis, BSc, MBA
Senior Consultant

Jennifer, a Senior Consultant with Stratos, brings a strong understanding of the business case for sustainable development to work with both public and private sector clients.  Her management consulting practice focuses on strategic planning and change management and helping organizations understand, plan for and implement sustainability-related programs and initiatives.  Jennifer also has strong expertise in the design, management and facilitation of stakeholder engagement processes on a range of sustainability issues.  Strongly interested in corporate water management, Jennifer sits on Stratos’ Water Issues Working Group.

An accomplished project manager, Jennifer leads work on some of Stratos’ largest files and has deep expertise in research, analysis and report writing for a variety of audiences.   Some of her recent clients include the Assembly of First Nations, Alliance Pipeline, Business Development Bank of Canada, Canada Post, Emera, Hydro Ottawa, Indian and Northern Affairs Canada, Industry Canada, the International Council of Forest and Paper Associations, Nature Canada, the Nuclear Waste Management Organization, Sustainable Technology Development Canada, and Walmart Canada.

Jennifer is a Certified Changed Management Practitioner and has a Master’s in Business Administration specializing in organizational change and performance management. Her MBA research focused on the drivers and barriers of business sustainability and the organizational tools used to facilitate the process of becoming a sustainable organization. Jennifer has also completed a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Sciences with a minor in International Development.

Michael Gullo, BES, MES
Senior Consultant

As a Senior Consultant, Michael leads Stratos’ evaluation practice.  He has developed considerable experience as a Project Manager of multiple program evaluations for various government, non-government and international clients in the areas of environment and sustainability. He was the Stratos Project Manager for major federal evaluations such as: the Cabinet Directive on the Environmental Assessment of Plans, Policies, and Programs; Canada’s Natural Health Products Program; and the Clean Air Agenda’s International Actions Theme.  He also led the Third Review of the Financial Mechanism for the Convention on Biological Diversity Secretariat.   Prior to becoming a Senior Consultant, Michael worked closely with evaluation specialists on a number of horizontal evaluations such as the evaluations of the Species at Risk Act and the Canadian Shellfish Sanitation Program.

Since starting at Stratos in 2005, Michael has completed more than 15 formal evaluations and a number of management reviews for public sector clients. This experience has allowed Michael to develop a clear understanding of environmental legislation, policies, and programs and their respective management systems – from governance and oversight of program activities, to monitoring and reporting on results.

Michael is a member of the Canadian Evaluation Society and a Coordinating Committee Member for the Canadian Environmental Evaluators Network in Canada.

Carolyn Hedley, BSc, MES
Consultant

Carolyn Hedley works with clients in the public and private sectors to help achieve long-term sustainability performance. She has a strong understanding of the sustainability challenges facing the Federal Government, Crown Corporations and private industry. As a Consultant, Carolyn works across the organization to provide support and lend her experience to projects in Strategy, Implementation and Assurance. She has valuable project experience in strategy development, program review and evaluation, reporting, guidance document development, and performance management and measurement. Recent clients include Hydro Ottawa, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, the Canadian Museum of Nature, Health Canada, and Indian and Northern Affairs Canada.

With a background in environmental studies and biology, Carolyn helps clients integrate ecosystem and biodiversity considerations into their programs and sustainability activities. She has received Corporate Ecosystem Services Review training provided by the World Resources Institute.

Prior to joining Stratos, Carolyn was an Environmental Risk Analyst for an ecological and human health risk assessment consulting firm. She acted as President of the Nova Scotia Chapter of the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society for two years. Carolyn holds a Masters Degree in Environmental Studies from Dalhousie University and a Bachelor of Science Degree (Biology) from Queen’s University.

When not at work, Carolyn enjoys spending time outdoors, especially playing ultimate Frisbee, hiking, and biking.

John Lark, BSc, MSc, MRMIA 
Strategic Manager, Risk Management

John Lark has been a leader in the implementation of Integrated Risk Management for departments in the Canadian Federal Government since 2000. He has developed risk profiles for a number of federal departments and for specific entities within departments. He also coordinated the development of Corporate Risk Profiles for each of nine core operating components of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. In addition he has experience in developing Corporate Risk Profiles for all core activities in a geographic region.  In June of 2006 John was the opening speaker at a Risk Management Conference in Canberra Australia as a global expert in risk management, further he was the keynote speaker at the Conference Board of Canada Risk Management Conference in the fall of 2006. John convened and chaired an invited session for all public and private sector risk management leaders in April of 2007. He is chaired a conference on Public Sector Risk Management in Ottawa on February 26 and 27, 2008 and spoke on risk management of federal contaminated sites in Vancouver in April of 2008. In addition John has considerable depth as a manager and has managed capital projects, operating dollars and staff and as well has conducted reviews, analyses and studies of operational efficiency, program effectiveness and value for money. John has also served as a risk management expert for the Auditor General for Canada.

As a member of the Risk Management Technical Working Group of the Canadian Standards Association, which is in the process of developing a new Canadian standard for Risk Management, John is reviewing all current risk standards and comparing them to the new ISO 31000 standard in its final draft form. John is also actively involved in developing the new Canadian risk management supplement that will replace the existing standard, Q850.

Chris Lindberg, BSc, MA, LEED AP
Senior Consultant

Chris provides policy, strategy and management services to support Stratos’ corporate sustainability and public sector business lines, with particular emphasis on sustainable community planning and development.
 
An accomplished facilitator, researcher and sustainability innovator, Chris has assisted governments, corporations, and not-for-profits across North America. He works with senior staff and elected officials to develop and implement sustainability strategies and programs. His project work has included long-term corporate and community visioning and planning; stakeholder engagement; sustainability policy development; green building design; sustainability reporting; and the analysis of specific issues and programs.

Chris’s recent work focuses on bridging the “planning-implementation gap” in organizations and communities. His approach draws on best practices in systems thinking, change management and governance. Recent presentations and publications include Governance for Resilient, Sustainable Cities and How to Apply Systems Thinking to Municipal Sustainability; he was also a contributing author to the Alberta Urban Municipalites’ Association's Guidebook for Municipal Sustainability Planning and the revised edition of the seminal book Toward Sustainable Communities.

Chris has extensive training in sustainability, including a Master of Arts degree from Simon Fraser University's Centre for Sustainable Community Development, a Bachelor of Environmental Science (Biology) and various professional development courses in stakeholder engagement, community economic development, ‘green’ real estate and The Natural Step Framework.

Stefan Reinecke, MASc, P.Eng.
Climate and Energy Specialist

Stefan Reinecke provides strategic advice and management services to organizations in the areas of sustainable development and contaminated sites. Stefan’s work focuses on program development and management, non-financial risk management, consultation processes, and stakeholder (community of interest) mapping.

He has acted as a rapporteur and report writer for numerous multi-stakeholder consultations involving both technical and policy content on such topics as corporate social responsibility, climate change, nuclear waste management and contaminated sites.

Before joining Stratos, Stefan worked primarily on assessment and remediation of contaminated sites in such settings as remote First Nation communities, and commercial and industrial sites. These experiences highlighted for him the importance of community-specific solutions and risk assessment to the achievement of sustainable and strategic approaches to contaminated site management.

Stefan particularly enjoys working with science- and technology-based organizations. He has contributed to the development and implementation of a project risk management procedure, including the development of guidance documents, training materials, and the facilitation of risk management workshops.

Stefan holds a Masters of Applied Science degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Toronto and a Bachelor of Applied Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Waterloo. He is a registered professional engineer in the Province of Ontario.

Outside of work, Stefan enjoys outdoor sports, painting, and attending local arts events.

Christian Schmidt, BComm, MSc
Consultant

Christian is a consultant with Stratos and works with a range of clients to develop and implement sustainability programs. He brings with him a breadth and depth of exposure to many areas related to sustainability science including systems analysis, and research methods as well as practical experience promoting change.

Christian Schmidt is a graduate of the University of Lund, Sweden with a Masters Degree in Environmental Studies and Sustainability Science, where he investigated the development and potential of pasture based farming within a Transition theory context. Prior to this Christian also completed a Bachelor of Commerce from the Haskayne School of Business.

Carla Stevens, BSc, MEDes
Consultant

Carla works with executive teams to improve sustainability performance. She works with both public and corporate sector clients to support risk management, performance measurement, review and evaluation, reporting and strategic policy and governance.

Carla is one of Stratos’ water experts and provides advice on strategic management, policy and engagement related to water. Recognized as a young leader in the Canadian water movement, Carla has contributed to national research on ‘water soft paths’ and recently published on institutional barriers to innovative water management (Making the Most of the Water We Have, Earthscan). She is also an active member of the Canadian Water Resources Association and is a Water Leader with the Walter and Duncan Gordon Foundation.

Before joining Stratos, Carla worked as an environmental consultant specializing in environmental impact assessment in Alberta and British Columbia and worked for Water Matters, an Alberta-based Environmental Non-Government Organization (ENGO) progressing provincial water policy. Carla has a Master’s Degree in Environmental Design from the University of Calgary and Bachelor of Science Degree in Environmental Science from Mount Alison University.
 
Carla spends her free time trying to get a hole in one at disc golf, finding new places to recreate in the Ottawa area, and checking out live music and arts events.

Barb Sweazey, BES, CPF
Manager

As a manager with Stratos Inc., Barb specializes in sustainable development and environmental management systems.  She brings over 15 years of experience in the environmental field, having provided a wide range of services in the areas of program development; environmental management systems; extended producer responsibility; corporate sustainability reporting analysis; technical writing and communications tools; training curriculum development and delivery; and program evaluation.  

Barb is a Certified Professional Facilitator (CPF) with the International Association of Facilitators.  Her approach to group process facilitation involves working closely with clients to understand the specific needs and challenges of an organization in order to design and facilitate a successful thinking framework and process.  Her meeting management approaches build on focusing the expertise and motivation that participants bring to sessions to effectively and efficiently reach the desired goal. Barb’s work in group process facilitation extends back many years, and includes experiences such as community group discussions, cross-Canada multi-stakeholder dialogues on sensitive topics, focus groups for interdepartmental government meetings, non-government organizations planning sessions, and corporate retreats.  She moves easily from strategic planning and visioning exercises, through to information gathering and discussions, problem-solving and decision-making, through to team building activities.

Barb is also certified with Langevin Learning Services as an Instructional Designer/ Developer.  She has worked closely with clients to understand employee training needs and challenges, and has designed and delivered many different instructional sessions (ranging from one hour training through to multiple day sessions).  Building on her professional training in instructional design and delivery, Barb uses creative and engaging methods to maintain participants’ interest and involvement throughout the training experience.  She has designed and instructed courses in sustainability, ISO 14001 auditing, and environmental obligations and liabilities to private- and public-sector organizations across Canada. Recently, Barb has been leading the design of an Orientation Training Program for new employees in the Northern Contaminated Sites Program at Indian and Northern Affairs Canada.  This includes the creation of an interactive Orientation Workbook and the development and delivery of a distributed training workshop model for project managers.
Her program evaluation work includes evaluating the implementation of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999, the Species at Risk program, the Canadian Shellfish Sanitation Program, the Cabinet Directive on the Environmental Assessment of Policy, Plans and Program Proposals, and more recently the Natural Health Products Program at Health Canada. Additionally, she conducts environmental management system gap analysis and program audits.

Prior to joining Stratos Inc. in 2005, Barb owned an environmental management consultancy practice, providing service to not-for-profit, private and public sector clients. She also served as the Regulatory Affairs Manager at Environment Canada between 2002 and 2003.  Barb holds a Bachelor of Environmental and Resource Studies degree from the University of Waterloo, with a minor in Peace and Conflict Studies.

Outside of work, Barb enjoys time with her family (2 busy boys), as well as mountain biking, cross-country skiing, and creative activities such as gardening and cut-glass art.

Vicky Weekes, MRM (Planning), BSc
Consultant

Vicky Weekes has expertise in policy and planning, strategy, performance measurement and stakeholder engagement. She works with both public and private sector clients to assess and improve sustainability performance through the development of strategic plans, business plans, implementation plans and performance management strategies. As one of Stratos’ water experts, Vicky has contributed to the development of water policies, performance management standards, and multi-stakeholder processes to inform water policy and planning in Canada. Vicky is a skilled project manager, researcher, analyst and communicator.

Prior to joining Stratos, Vicky completed her master’s degree in Resource and Environmental Management (Planning) at Simon Fraser University. For her master’s thesis, Vicky worked with a municipality in British Columbia to examine stakeholders’ attitudes toward municipal water planning and management in order to inform future water management and policy efforts. Vicky also worked in outdoor and environmental education for many years and completed an Honours degree in Psychology at the University of Guelph. She is a provisional member with the Ontario Professional Planners Institute and the Canadian Institute of Planners.

Outside of work, Vicky enjoys outdoor activities of all kinds, and she is a whitewater canoeing instructor with the Ontario Recreational Canoeing and Kayaking Association (ORCKA).
